When stubborn fat remains despite consistent diet and exercise, liposuction can help refine body shape and improve proportion. However, not every liposuction procedure follows the same treatment plan. At Esthetica Center for Cosmetic Surgery of San Diego, we customize body contouring based on each patient’s anatomy, skin quality, and aesthetic goals.
Two common options are standard liposuction and 360 liposuction. Understanding how they differ can help you determine which approach may provide the balanced results you want.
Standard liposuction targets one or more specific areas where localized fat has become difficult to reduce. A patient may choose to address the lower abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, back, chest, or neck. Small, discreet incisions are used to remove excess fat and create a smoother contour.
This approach may be appropriate when the concern is concentrated in a clearly defined area. For example, someone who is satisfied with their overall midsection but has a persistent lower abdominal pocket may not need circumferential contouring.
Liposuction is not designed for significant weight loss. We generally consider it for healthy patients who are close to their goal weight, have realistic expectations, and have enough skin elasticity to adapt to their new contours.
Lipo 360 is a more comprehensive approach to midsection contouring. Instead of treating only the front of the abdomen or another isolated area, we address the torso circumferentially. Treatment commonly includes the abdomen, flanks, waist, and lower back.
By evaluating the midsection from every angle, we can create smoother transitions between treated areas and improve the overall balance of the torso. For many San Diego patients, this approach offers more complete waist definition than treating a single fat pocket alone.
Lipo 360 may help improve:
• Abdominal contour and definition
• Waist shape from the front and sides
• Love handles and flank fullness
• Lower back fat
• Overall torso proportion and clothing fit
The best choice depends on more than the number of areas you want treated. During your consultation, we evaluate how fat is distributed around your torso, your skin elasticity, your medical history, and the type of result you want.
Standard liposuction may be sufficient when one isolated area is affecting your proportions. Lipo 360 may be more suitable when excess fat extends around several parts of the midsection and a full-torso approach would create better balance.
Neither procedure automatically tightens significantly loose skin. When skin laxity is present, we may discuss combining liposuction with skin tightening or a tummy tuck. Lipo 360 may also be combined with another body contouring procedure when appropriate.
Recovery varies based on the extent of treatment and whether other procedures are performed. Swelling, bruising, and temporary soreness are expected, and results become more visible as swelling gradually resolves. Maintaining a stable weight can help preserve the improved contour over time.
