Esthetica is proud to offer our patients the Obalon Gastric Balloon in San Diego. As the first and only swallowable intragastric balloon, Obalon is designed to take up space in your stomach so that you eat less and lose weight faster.
Obalon is an FDA-approved, non-surgical weight loss treatment. It facilitates weight loss by taking up space in your stomach, causing you to feel full after eating less food. During treatment, a total of three weight loss balloons are placed in your stomach over a six-month period. These balloons, combined with a comprehensive nutrition and exercise plan, result in dramatic weight loss for many of our Coronado clients.
All of our patients agree: Obalon works. When compared to diet and exercise alone, men and women who combined a healthy lifestyle with our La Jolla gastric balloon system experienced up to twice the weight loss.
It’s important to note that the degree of your weight loss is directly linked to your lifestyle changes. In addition, the system can support long-lasting and sustainable results if you maintain your new diet and exercise plan after the balloons are removed.
To insert the balloons, you will swallow a capsule that is about the size of a vitamin and attached to a micro-catheter. Using an x-ray, our plastic surgeons will confirm that the capsule is safely in place in your stomach. As it dissolves, the balloon will be inflated with gas and the micro-catheter will be removed. You will need to repeat this process two additional times over your six-month treatment period to place a total of three balloons.
This entire process takes about ten minutes to complete and does not require any sedation or anesthesia. In addition, no permanent anatomical changes are made to your body. The balloons are both lightweight and buoyant, which maximizes patient comfort. The most common complaints are mild abdominal pain and nausea, though these side effects are temporary and should dissipate with time. There is no downtime associated with Obalon, and you will be free to return to work and your normal daily routine right away.
Once your six-month treatment is complete, you will need to return to our Coronado or Del Mar office and have all three of your gastric balloons removed under light sedation. This procedure is brief and should be done in about fifteen minutes.
You cannot take any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or Aspirin while our Del Mar weight loss balloons are in your stomach. You cannot have the balloons inserted if you live or plan to live at an altitude of 4000 feet higher or 2500 feet lower than the elevation where the balloons were originally inserted. The Obalon gastric balloon system is a great way to kickstart your weight loss efforts. However, your ultimate success will depend on your willingness to adopt and stick with the new lifestyle changes.
The ideal candidate for the Obalon weight loss balloon system is a man or woman with a body mass index (BMI) of between 30 and 40. That generally translates to 30 to 100 pounds overweight. In addition, it is recommended that you are at least 22 years old and committed to maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine during and after treatment.
If you have any questions or concerns about the process, please talk to our La Jolla plastic surgeons. We are happy to discuss the procedure with you and help you determine if it is in your best interest.
