Chin Augmentation

A small or weak chin can create an undesirable facial appearance. When this occurs, a chin augmentation is a simple, highly effective way to increase the projection of your chin and restore a balanced and attractive look.

Before and After Photos

Purpose

The chin plays an important role in determining attractiveness and facial harmony. Because it is intimately related to the rest of your features, a chin that recedes or is too small can create the appearance of:

    • An undefined jawline
    • An overly large nose
    • An unbalanced overall look
    • A fleshy neck

By bringing your chin into harmony with the rest of your features, a chin implant can dramatically improve your appearance.

Candidate

The best chin augmentation candidates are men and women who have a receding chin and a normal dental bite. If any bite dysfunction is present, you may still be a candidate, but jaw surgery may need to be performed as well.

In addition you should:

  • Be a non-smoker and in good general health
  • Have realistic expectations for your chin augmentation results
  • Not take certain medications, such as Accutane, which can impact bone growth and scarring

Procedure

The chin augmentation procedure is relatively straight-forward. It takes about an hour to complete and can be done under local or general anesthesia. To begin, we will create a small incision either beneath the chin or inside the mouth.

Through that opening, we will insert the implant and position it in front of the jawbone. The implant is composed of silicone and shaped similarly to an athletic chin guard. It is custom-formed to fit your face, and create a well-defined and natural-looking jawline. To complete the procedure, we will suture the implant into place and close the incisions.

Recovery

You will return home shortly after surgery to begin the healing process. However, you will need to return to the office the next day and one week later so that we can monitor your progress.

During the initial recovery period, some swelling, bruising and pain is to be expected. These effects should subside within two weeks, and we may prescribe you pain medication to help you manage the discomfort if needed. Most patients are able to return to work and their normal daily routine in about one week.

Risks

In general, chin augmentation is a very safe procedure. Complications are infrequent and usually minor.

They may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry
  • Swelling
  • Rejection of the implant
  • Wrinkling of the implant
  • Numbness or sensation changes

Rarely, patients may require an additional procedure to address the complication.
